The Resin Set

As you may or may not be aware, the Black Box company has risen from the Kendal Model Company, after KMC made the commercial decision to pursue injection molding in lieu of continuing with the resin medium detail sets. Luckily for us, from what I have been able to ascertain, is that the KMC molds have been purchased by "True Details", and will eventually be remarketed by that company. The staff that left KMC, again, also luckily for us, have stuck together and formed VMD and produced the "Black Box" range of cockpit detail sets. This is the fourth release by "Black Box" in the new range, and following on from the first three are absolutely superb. The set is designed for the

Hasegawa kit No.#07010 which is still readily available in the Hasegawa range. It can also be used in the Hasegawa " Collectors Hi-Grade Series" kit No. CH 1, if you are lucky enough to have one. I do, and will be doing a build article, using this detail set for QWS in the near future using the above kit. The master pattern for this set was created by Michael Kirchoff with the instruction sheet done by Machmaster and Willy Peeters. Inside the small plastic box come 15 resin moldings in the familiar yellow colour of KMC rememberings. There is a cockpit tub, three sides for the rear avionics bay (which butts up against the rear of the cockpit tub molding ), avionics boxes for the bay in a single casting, ejection seat with the support sill and side rails, canopy locking mechanism, instrument panel, rudder pedals, control stick as well as 2 cockpit side walls. The quality off the castings is excellent, with no air bubbles present in any of the castings, and the detail supplied is exceptional. Care will be needed when removing some of the parts from the pour stubs as damage could result so all you hamfisted modellers out there 'beware'. The ejection seat comes complete with molded straps with the ejection handle and air pressure sensors supplied as extra castings. Rudder pedals are supplied as well as the canopy actuating mechanism. Painting instructions and colours are indicated on the instruction sheet, however check those references as not all the colours are given. I feel I can remember reading on "Hyperscale" a while ago that some F-15s after a certain major servicing, had their avionics bays repainted white in lieu of the earlier light metallic green. Some dry run fitting of some of the parts showed that the set has been engineered well and fitted almost faultlessly. Excellent references would be the 'Lock-On # 4' by Willy Peeters of the Verlinden range, or the additionally superb 'Detail and Scale' # 14 by Bert Kinzey.

Conclusion

Overall an excellent product that all you super detailers out there will revell in. Excellent detail, wonderful moldings and good engineering, should make these sets winners. They have definitely won me.!! I can remember reading somewhere that 'Black Box' have also released a set for the F-15E strike eagle to fit either the new Revell release or the older Hasegawa kit. I'll have to look further into that and get my local supplier to definitely order that one for me. Unreservedly recommended.
