Il libro

La velocità con cui il Corsair fu introdotto in servizio come caccia basato a terra obbligò i piloti ad imparare volando. L'aereo dimostrò subito di essere superiore agli Zero giapponesi e ebbe il ruolo principale nella distruzione dell'elite della IJA Giapponese nel teatro del Sud Pacifico. In seguito, per arginare l'ondata degli attacchi Kamikaze, the Corsair ancora una volta fulmineamente buttato nella mischia, ma questa volta nel ruolo per il quale era stato progettato: come caccia imbarcato. Questo versatile velivolo prestò servizio con la US Navy ed i Marines, la British Fleet Air Arm e la RNZAF. La maggior parte dei piloti che hanno raccontato le loro esperienze nelle pagine di questo volume sono concordi nel definire lo 4FU come il miglior caccia in assoluto del teatro del Pacifico. Il volume inizia con l'offensiva contro il Giappone nel Pacifico Sud-Ovest e grazie al FPO Office della US Navy mostra una mappa dettagliata del teatro d'operazione nella zona delle Solomons Islands.Ciò è molto importante poichè il lettore può rendersi conto dove fu esattamente combattuta la guerra aerea. Nel primo capitolo (Guadalcanal Debut) c'è un interessante descrizione del Lt Kenneth A Walsh sui debutto in combattimento del VMF-124 dove il pilota spiega l'essenza della supremazia del Corsair nel Pacifico "l'altitudine era basilare. Chiunque governava l'altitudine, govenava la battaglia..." e "Dovevi evitare di essere lento quando combattevi con uno zero..." per cui come possiamo dedurre queste erano le condizioni ideali per la "Whistling Death". Buone fonti di riferimento possono essere trovate nel capitolo "US Navy Corsairs" mentre "Central Pacific" un buon racconto sull'attacco kamikaze alla portaerei Bunker Hill. Molto interessante, ma poco coperto da immagini è il capitolo dei "British Corsair" dove si sarebbero potute vedere mimetiche più ispiratrici per i modellisti. La mancanza di Corsair inglesi si ha anche nei profili dove la "dominante blue" poteva essere spezzata da qualche mimetica RAF. A parte tutto ci sono molti ottimi profili ispiratori: secondo la mia opinione, su tutti, quelli delle pagine 32, 33 e 35 dove è più possibile evitare un Corsair tutto blu che dal suo canto, però, può essere una bella sfida per provare la propria abilità nell'invecchiamento. The book

The speed with which the Corsair was rushed into service as a land-based fighter obliged the pilots to learn on the job. The aircraft soon proved to be superior to the Japanese Zero and played a major part in the destruction of Japan’s elite air forces in the South Pacific. Later, in an effort to counter the Kamikaze threat, the Corsair was once again hurriedly pressed into service; this time in its originally intended role as a shipboard fighter. This versatile aircraft saw service with the US Navy and Marines, the British Fleet Air Arm and the RNZAF. Most of the 4FU pilots who recount their experiences within these pages considered it to be the best all-round fighter in the Pacific theatre. The volume begins with the offensive against the Japanese South West Pacific and with the courtesy of the US Navy's FPO office show a detailed map of the operation teathre all around the Solomons Islands. This is really important because the reader can recognize where exactly the air war was fought. In the first chapter (Guadalcanal Debut) of the book there's an interesting description by Lt Kenneth A Walsh about the VMF-124's combat debuct where the pilot give the essence of the supremacy of the Corsair in the Pacific "the altitude was paramount. Whoever had altitude dictated the terms of the battle..." and "You avoided to be slow when combating a Zero..." so as we can argue these were perfect conditions for the "Whistling Death". Good reference sources can be found in the chapter "US Navy Corsairs" while chapter "Central Pacific" offers a good tell about the kamikaze attack to Bunker Hill carrier. A chapter for me really interesting but not too much covered by photographic references is "British Corsair" where should have been shown a different camouflaged Corsairs with creative effects on modeller's projects. The lack of British Corsairs is present also in the profiles pages where the "blue tone" should have been broken by some RAF pattern. By the way there are a lot of profiles giving also excellent suggestions: by my personal opinion above all the profiles on page 32, 33 and page 35 where is more suitable to avoid an overall blue Corsair that on the other side can be a good challenge to try your weathering ability. I Profili: John Weal and Mark Styling

Sicuramente il più accurato artista di profili nel ramo, l'amore di John Weal per i velivoli Germanici rende il suo lavoro un trattato per chi studia il soggetto. Ha scritto diversi volumi della serie Aircraft of the Aces, e due libri sullo JU 87 nella serie gemella Combat Aircraft. Mark Styling ha firmato anche i disegni in scala.

Arguably the finest profile artist in the business, John Weal’s love of German aircraft makes his work a treat for students of the subject. He has written several Aircraft of the Aces volumes, and two books on the JU 87 in the companion series Combat Aircraft. Mark Styling signed also the scale drawings.

Questo libro secondo la mia opinione è un must per tutti gli amanti della "guerra dimenticata" perciò non perdetelo!!! Altamente raccomandato.
