The book
Grumman's successor to the pugnacious Wildcat, the Hellcat embodied many of the lessons learnt by F4F pilots in the opening months of the Pacific war. Introduced to the fleet in January 1943, and blooded in combat against the Japanese by VF-5 seven months later, the F6F served as the principal US Navy fighter on board carrier decks until VJ-Day. Despite its lethality in the air when ranged against the best Japanese fighters, it still retained docile handling qualities around the carrier deck. Pilots flying the Hellcat claimed nearly 5000 kills in the Pacific, and over 350 pilots achieved ace status on the type. This time is really difficult to say what I really prefer in this volume: every chapter, every paragraph is of great importance and all the book captured my attention. Forterss Rabaul, the 'Turkey Shot' paragraph, the Philippines and Tokyo chapters, the pilots' tales, the history of VF-19, the terrific amount of images, the British Hellcat everything in this book is intruding and keep your eyes on those pages. So the only reviews possible is to say that with this book you must be first read and then watch figures. The opposite you do with your preferred comics magazine. I had really great time reading about that "terrible guys" becoming aces flying in a blue Hellcat. The only thing that makes me disappointed was the absence of British Hellcat in the profiles pages (exactly as the "Corsair Aces") give a classic "blue tone" to this section. By the way there are a lot of profiles giving also excellent suggestions: by my personal opinion above all the profiles on page 34, 35 and page 39 where is more suitable to avoid an overall blue Hellcat that on the other side (another again like "Corsair Aces") can be a good challenge to try your weathering ability. The Profiles: Mark Styling
Mark has illustrated several books in both the Aircraft of the Aces and Combat Aircraft series. He has recently switched mediums from airbrush to Mac art, and has produced some of the best profiles Osprey has used to date in Combat Aircraft 18: 'B-17 Flying Fortress Units of the Eigth Air Force' (part 1) and Combat Aircraft 22: 'Mitsubishi Type 1 Rikko Betty Units of World War 2'.
