Dr Alfred Pice
Dr Alfred Price served as an aircrew officer in the Royal Air Force, where he was a crewman on Vulcan bombers and specialised in electronic warfare and air fighting tactics. In a military flying career spanning fifteen years he logged over 4,000 flying hours. He left the service in 1974 and since then has been a full-time writer on aviation subjects. He is author of 46 books and more than 200 magazine articles. He holds a PhD in history from Loughborough University and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. |

The book Spitfire Mk
Is and IIs served only briefly in the frontline with the RAF, but their
pilots were responsible for achieving impressive scores against the
Luftwaffe during 1940/41. This volume details the RAF's first aces of
World War 2 who helped stem the German tide during Britain's struggle
for survival in the bitter years between 1939 and 1941. Early-mark Spitfires
were notorious for their light armament, overheating engines and short
range, but during the dogfights over Dunkirk and south-east England,
then the first tentative sweeps across France, many pilots achieved
scores of note. The volume tells in the first bars of text "Spitfires
first fired their guns in anger on 6 September 1939, three days after
Great Britain declared war to Germany. At 06,45 hours…" and
this is the start of the Spitfire bound to glory. What is really well
done in the book the following with great precision all the development
and the improving of this fantastic warbird with specific references
to facts and men. All the aspects are examinated in the volume: technical
improvements, fighting tactics, armament deficiency. A must (could never
lack talking about the Spitfire) is the chapter about the Battle of
Britain with an interesting paragraph about the 'Battle management'
at page 26. The book is full of clear and sharp b&w photos with
a lot of intruding subjects. 1/72 scale drawing by Mark Styling are
provided in the appendices section. Good part of the book is dedicated
to the aces celebrated in two chapters: the first is chapter six - Top
Spitfire Mk I/II Aces - where, obviously, the story is told about the
best men that flown the Spit. The second is chapter seven - Two Aces
Profiled - , by Tony Holmes, is about only two famous aces: George "Grumpy"
Unwin and Desmond Sheen. There are about 40 profiles in the volume,
just take one closing your eyes and poiting your finger. Here are book's

Questo volume parla dei primi assi della RAF della Seconda Guerra Mondiale i quali arginarono la marea Tedesca durante la lotta per la sopravvivenza della Gran Bretagna negli anni amari tra il 1939 ed il 1941. I primi mark Spitfire erano noti avere un armamento leggero, motori che si surriscaldavano e corto raggio, ma prima durante gli scontri sopra Dunkirk a nel sud-est dell'Inghilterra, e poi durante il primo tentativo di arrivare in Francia, molti piloti ottennero vittorie degne di nota. Il volume recita nelle prime righe di testo "Gli Spitfire aprirono per la prima volta il fuoco nelle ostilità il 6 settembre 1939, tre giorni dopo la dichiarazione di guerra alla Germania. Alle ore 06,45.." e questo è l'inizio del cammino verso la gloria dell Spitfire. Ciò che è ben fatto nel libro è il seguire con grande precisione tutto lo sviluppo ed il miglioramento di questo fantastico aereo con richiami specifici a fatti e uomini. Nel libro sono esaminati tutti gli aspetti: miglioramenti tecnici, tattiche di combattimento, debolezza di armamento. D'obbligo è il capitolo sulla battaglia d'Inghilterra con un interessante paragrafo sul "battle management" a pagina 26. Il libro è pieno di nitide foto b&n con un sacco di soggetti accattivanti. Ci sono anche disegni in scala 1/72 di Mark Styling nella sezione appendice. Buona parte del libro è dedicata agli assi celebrati in due capitoli: il primo è il sesto capitolo - Top Spitfire Mk I/II Aces - dove, chiaramente, la storia tratta dei migliori uomini che volarono sullo Spit. Il secondo è il settimo capitolo - Two Aces Profiled - , di Tony Holmes, che tratta di due famosi assi: George "Grumpy" Unwin e Desmond Sheen. ci sono circa 40 profili nel volume, per cui chiudete gli occhi e puntate il dito scegliendone uno. Questi sono i capitoli del libro: Introduction - Initial Encounters - Improving the Breed - Battle of Britain - Further Improvements and New Tactics - Over to the Offensive - Top Spitfire Mk I/II Aces - Two Aces Profiled - Appendices I Profili: Keith Fretwell L'ultimo Keith Fretwell è stato un artista molto talentuoso.
