Il libro

Nessun volume in lingua inglese era apparso prima d'ora trattando questo argomento, ora che le restizioni nell' ex Unione Sovietica si sono allentate, le gesta dell'elite dei piloti delle varie Forze Aeree Sovietiche sono venute alla luce. Sebbene inizialmente equipaggiati con aerei vecchi, privi di una leadership effettiva grazie sia alla "pulizia" di Stalin nei tardi anni 30 che agli sforzi della Luftwaffe, I piloti da caccia Societici riuscirono a ribaltare le sorti grazie agli arei in prestito come gli Hurricane, Spitfire, P-39 and P-40, e grazie a "prodotti casalinghi" come i MiG-3, LaGG-3/5, Lavochkin La-5/7/9 and the Yak-1/3. Il volume percorre con fluidità e precisione tutta la storia della VVS sin dal 1930 fino alla fine della Grande Guerra Patriottica. E' anche molto interessante leggere il primo capitolo "The making of a fighter ace" dove compaiono argomenti spesso non presenti in libri di questo tipo come l'attribuzione di abbattimenti, le ricompense e le tattiche. E' anche una soluzione originale dividere il libro in un capitolo sullle grandi battaglie dei piloti delle VVS, un capitolo che collega il velivolo al pilota ed uno che tratta degli assi nome per nome. La cura nella trattazione è puntuale e si troveranno diversi spunti per poter realizzare bei modelli aiutati da immagini significative e chiare. I profili sono tanti e danno ottimi spunti: secondo la mia personale opinione sora tutti ci sono il MiG-3 del Capitano S. Polyakov (bello lo schema ed il numero personale che può essere riprodotto con una buona mascheratura) ed il La-5FN del Capitano Popkov. Riguardo i profili bisogna notare la grande varietà di velivoli: P-39, P-440, P-40, I-153, I-16, MiG-3, LaGG-3, La-5, La-7, La-9, Yak-1and Yak-3. In questo libro non manca nulla ed è un volume essenziale per chi (modellista o appassionato) vuole avere una buona documentazione sugli Assi Sovietici. Questo libro colma il vuoto che c'è nella vostra collezione di Aircraft of the Aces!!!

The book

No single volume in English has ever appeared in the West dealing with this intriguing subject area, but now that restrictions have relaxed in the former Soviet Union, records of the deeds of the elite pilots of the various Soviet Air Forces are coming to light. Although initially equipped with very poor aircraft, and robbed of effective leadership thanks as much to Stalin's purges in the late 1930s as to the efforts of the Luftwaffe, Soviet fighter pilots soon turned the tables through the use of both lend-lease aircraft like the Hurricane, Spitfire, P-39 and P-40, and home-grown machines like the MiG-3, LaGG-3/5, Lavochkin La-5/7/9 and the Yak-1/3. The volume treats with fluent style and precision all the story of the VVS since 1930 to the end of the Great Patriotic War. It's really interesting to read chapter one "The making of a fighter ace" where are treated subjects not so often found in this type of book like the combat claims, rewards and tactics. Also it is an original solution to divide book with a chapter about the great battles fought by VVS airmen, a chapter that link the aicraft to the pilot and another one that tell about the aces name by name. The care in the treatment is sharp and good advices to realize beautiful models can be found with the help of clear and significant images. There are a lot of profiles giving also excellent suggestions: by my personal opinion above all the MiG-3 flown by Capt S. Polyakov (nice scheme pattern and personal number that can be depicted with a good masking work) and the La-5FN flown by Capt Popkov. About profiles it's noticeable the great variety of aircraft depicted: P-39, P-440, P-40, I-153, I-16, MiG-3, LaGG-3, La-5, La-7, La-9, Yak-1and Yak-3. In this book doesn't lack really anything and the volume is essential to whom (both modeller and enthusiasts) want to have a correct documentation about the Soviet Aces. Put this book in row to feel the gap in your Aircraft of the Aces collection!!!

Sicuramente il più accurato artista di profili nel ramo, l'amore di John Weal per i velivoli Germanici rende il suo lavoro un trattato per chi studia il soggetto. Ha scritto diversi volumi della serie Aircraft of the Aces, e due libri sullo JU 87 nella serie gemella Combat Aircraft.

Un classico della Osprey Aviation della serie degli "indimenticabili" che copre un soggetto "oscuro" della storia dell'aviazione. Il libro è un must per tutti gli appassionati di Fw 190 e ve lo raccomando caldamente! Chiamate la vostra libreria di fiducia e fate spazio sui vostri affollati scaffali!

An Osprey Aviation classic in the "unforgettable" series that cover a dark subject of the aviation history. the book is a must for all Soviet Aviationthe Fw 190 enthusiasts and for me is highly recommended! Go and catch it!
