The
Author: Dr Alfred Price
Dr Alfred Price served as an aircrew officer in the Royal Air Force, where he was a crewman on Vulcan bombers and specialised in electronic warfare and air fighting tactics. In a military flying career spanning fifteen years he logged over 4,000 flying hours. He left the service in 1974 and since then has been a full-time writer on aviation subjects. He is author of 46 books and more than 200 magazine articles. He holds a PhD in history from Loughborough University and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. |

The book Dr. Price wrote
in his introduction "The Spitfires Mk V bore the brunt of RAF fighter
operations during the difficult period between the end of the Battle
of Britain and mid-1943
" These words show how a failure of
this vital project should have been tragic for the Royal Air Force's
future. What the author really well done in the book is to tell following
with great precision all the development and the improving of this important
variation that was built also with tropical modifications. Is interesting
to read at page 15 the unusual modification studied to reach Malta with
a jettisonable 90-gallon tank fit under the Spit's fuselage. A must
is the chapter about the Battle of Malta with some images of the Spitfires
on the carrier's deck and a further chapter dedicated to the tactics
of the Malta ace Reade F. Tilley. Also interesting are the photos regarding
the Spitfires involved in the Operation Jubelee (the amphibious landing
in Dieppe) with the four white large stripes on the nose of the aircrafts
recalled by the profile at page 38, the chapter dedicated to the North
Africa and the chapter Spitfire Vs Far and Wide. The book is full of
clear and sharp b&w photos with a lot of intruding subjects. 1/72
scale drawing by Mark Styling are provided in the appendices section.
